Graham’s TOP 5 Albums of 2010
1. Deftones- Diamond Eyes
Prior to hearing this album, I was a casual Deftones listener, but was never really that into them. But once I heard this album, I was immediately hooked. The melodies are so beautiful and are paired with some of the best heavy music I have ever heard. The balance between the two is something that really struck me. And aside from the sonics, the songs are so well written. This was definitely the top choice in the van all year, our go to album. It’s rare to find an album these days that is worth listening to all the way through, let alone play it over and over again without getting tired of it. To me, its the best, most cohesive album of the year.
2. B.o.B- The Adventures of Bobby Ray
I had heard the hits, but after we opened for B.o.B and his band this summer, I immediately got the album because I was so impressed with their live show, and I was not disappointed. Along with the smash hits on the album are a collection of really well written and envelope pushing songs. The album is cohesive yet versatile and shows how talented this dude really is.
3. Drake- Thank Me Later
I gotta admit I was skeptical at first about Drake, but Salim turned me on to this album and I was really impressed. I am probably not the only one who is sick of hearing about guns, jewels and bitches in every hip-hop song. Drake’s content is so much deeper than most in the game. The production on the songs is really well done and interesting as well as some great collaborations (Swizz Beats, Alicia Keys, The Dream, Jay-Z).
4. J.Cole- Friday Night Lights
Sheel turned me on to this album a few weeks ago and I can’t stop listening to it. It’s got such a classic hip-hop vibe that reminds me of Nas, A Tribe Called Quest and Common. The album has so much depth, and like Drake, he has some really great content in his lyrics.
5. Cee Lo Green- The Lady Killer
To Me, Cee Lo is one of the only artists holding it down and pushing the envelope for modern soul and R&B . He reminds me of a contemporary Curtis Mayfield. He’s definitely reaching back to some classic shit like Raphael Saadiq and R. Kelly have done recently, but Cee Lo’s voice and style are just so unique he cannot be mistaken.
Favorite Song of 2010: “Flume” by Peter Gabriel (Bon Iver cover)
Honorable Album Mentions: Foxy Shazam, Self Titled /// Arcade Fire, The Suburbs
To look for in 2011: Cody B. Ware
