Dua’s Top 5 Albums of 2010
1. Bilal -  Airtights Revenge
I consider myself a huge Bilal fan. He is one of my major musical/vocal influences. So when this album came out i was more than eager to get it and listen to it. While we were on tour with Mike Posner all i did was listen to his melodies. Once i got home i sat down and gave it a lyrical listen. Most of the songs spoke to me. Bilal has a way of explaining love, social problems, and his life through song. Two songs that really stood out for me where “Robots” and “All Matter”. Robots touched on how we as a society follow the leader, glorify money, and how communities neglect their young. Favorite line in that song: A baby born with tears/ tryin to speak/ a sign the end is near/ his first words were ‘where’s daddy’/can you hear the room stand still when she looked in his eyes/ ‘baby i dont know….go ask the president’/. Song gives me chills. I would suggest any fan of soul music to pick that up.
2. Erykah Badu -New Amerkyah Part II
Like Salim, i was mad excited to cop this gem of a material from Queen Badu. Every last song from beginning to end had me nodding my head. The production was top notch, very soulful, very hip hop, very dirty yet so so so clean. Erykah Badu knows how to keep your attention her voice can’t be denied. And her statements will forever remain timeless.
3. Oddisee - Traveling Man
This brother is a ridiculous producer from the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area. His sound is quintessential for any hip hop listener. And his style is very refreshing. What drew me to this album out of all his albums that he released this year was the theme. Traveling Man had a beat for every city Oddisee traveled to. This made our drive cross country very inspiring. I hope one day Oddisee will catch a show in DC, maybe if we are lucky. lol.
4. Janelle Monae - The Archandroid
Graham put me on to Ms. Monae a few years ago. I then fell in love with her. I also fell in love with her voice, performance, style, and ability to keep an ongoing theme for her songs. So when Archandroid dropped i was eager to see if she would keep with her sci-fi theme. Being an such a nerd, Im a sucker for stuff like that. I love robots and light sabers (dork beyond dorks). She didn’t disappoint me with staying on theme. And i loved her interludes, it made the album more cohesive to me.
5. Deftones - Diamond Eyes
This album kills! Hands down. This is the one album i can listen to from beginning to end on repeat 5-10 times a day. Chinos vocals have a captivating way of gripping the listener and putting them in a trance. So many melodies and heavy sounds drifting in and out of this album. I think this is their best work. Well, one of their best pieces of work, they are the DEFTONES. This album left me speechless.
